I have been drawing and writing from the moment I could hold a crayon.
When I was 7, my friend Kristy and I attempted to self publish a book called Turkey Feet. It never took off, but I blame a lack of financing and limited connections in the publishing industry. Also the fact that, if we're being honest, the story was missing any kind of narrative arc and the conclusion was pedestrian at best. Our parents thought it was cute though.
I got a perfect score on the verbal section of my SATS. This is best exemplified in my ability to complete the New York Times crossword puzzle on a semi-regular basis (usually the Monday, not the Sunday).
I am horrible at math. This is best exemplified when I do math.
I went to college, which was fun, and I got to study abroad in Italy, which was amazing. I also met my husband while I was in college, which was even more fun and amazing. I graduated in the fall of 2001, when the nation's economy was tanking and no one was hiring creative types. That was neither fun nor amazing.
Eventually, I began writing and designing blogs as an outlet to satisfy a need for creativity that wasn't being met in my 9-5 job of managing electronic health records. I wrote some funny stuff, and was even even interviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle and The Washington Post, the latter of which attributed this gem of a quote to me: "I hate the Olympics. The Olympics are so boring and they disrupt my regular TV-watching schedule. So I hate them." I have since made my peace with the Olympics, at least the summer ones. Also, my three kids have had a much bigger impact on my TV-watching schedule than the IOC ever could.
Which reminds me, I have 3 kids. I love them more than I ever thought I could love anything. I like them...most of the time.
My husband is still fun and amazing
I am currently working on what I hope will be my first children's book, A Compendium of Creatures (preview of illustrations available here).
